Audio and Video can be good choices to help build vocabulary and general knowledge/context for ESOL students and struggling readers.

Here at Druid Hills Middle we have a large collection of audiobooks as well as a growing collection of DVD movies made from great kid's books. The DeKalb Public Library offers free audio downloads of a range of adult and children's books and audiobooks and video for checkout. Librivox also has a large number of free audio downloads of public domain titles read by volunteers.

The following websites offer simple text read aloud:

Encyclopedia Britannica (through GALILEO - pw needed for home use) has an audio option with their articles. Click on the green arrow icon just to the left of the heading. Each sentence is highlighted as it is read. A number of the other GALILEO and DeKalb Public Library subscription databases now offer a "listen" feature for their magazine & newspaper articles too.

Adult Learning Activities through the California Distance Learning Project has a large range of very short, simple news stories that have an audio option. In addition, some include video. For related vocabulary, quiz, and spelling, click the "activities" tab

Many Things.org organizes some of the Voice of America "Special English" broadcasts with easy-click short audio clips + read along, printable text about animals, countries, science, language, history, and much more.

Voice of America broadcasts a Special English version which provides clear, simple news broadcasts with a slower than usual pace and a core vocabulary of about 1500 words. Transcripts, podcasts, etc are available. It is designed for adults who are learning English.
