County Info to Share:
As of today, feedback from the Math Options Planning Team and Math Departments from schools in DCSS, overwhelmingly supports the offering of the traditional Math pathway, also called the discrete math option that may be provided by the state BOE if Dr. Barge's recommendation is approved. The discrete math option will utilize the same standards as the current courses of Math I, Math II, and Math III. However, the difference will be the sequencing of those standards for a more traditional approach to teaching mathematics. The discrete approach would be applicable to all incoming 9th graders starting the 2011-12 school year. It should be noted that we have identified two neighboring districts who are following or planning to follow the discrete approach as well. The discrete math approach, taught using the Common Core Georgia Performance
Standards (GPS) sequenced as appropriate, would be as follows:
9th Grade Course Intermediate Algebra with Statics
10th Grade Course Geometry and Statistics
11th Grade Course Advanced Algebra and Statistics
12th Grade Course Multiple Course Offerings in Mathematics
To ensure our parents have the opportunity to weigh in on this potentially new direction in DCSS impacting 9th graders starting the 2011-12 school year, all middle and high school parents are requested to share feedback on the district's intention to offer the discrete math option (commonly referred to as the traditional approach) using the GPS appropriately sequenced for such an option if the state BOE approves to grant such flexibility to districts. Parents may share feedback by going to the district's website or by utilizing the link below.

Information on Enrichment Classes:
I serve as one of the "specials" on a 6 day rotation for Kindergarten and 1st Grades.
Topics in Enrichment (more topics will be added each week):
~Gummy Math - using a package of gummies the students will work on predictions, graphing, fractions and other math concepts.
*This link will has other challenging problems that your child can do using
M and M's.

~Tangrams - students were given simple tangram puzzles to work. We will work on more difficult puzzles later in the year.
~Float My Boat Experiment - students will create an aluminum foil boat that will hold the greatest number of pennies. We will discuss boats and how they carry such heavy cargo.
~Puzzles - the students have the opportunity to build, create, and design with various puzzles in class. Students often ask where I get the puzzles. Here is the link to where I purchase most of my centers.
~Gooey Fun Fall Science - Fall is the perfect time for oozing, bubbling, eye-catching science! Students will learn about polymers, closed and open circuits, weather, and other fun science concepts. I will use literature to integrate science and Language Arts. Here is the link to many of the experiments in enrichment:

Information on the Gifted Program:
What is Discovery?
The Discovery program is the name for services provided for students identified as gifted at the elementary level. Discovery is designed to enhance the instructional experiences in the regular educational program and provide opportunities that are more challenging and stimulating than those afforded students in the regular curriculum.
Students in the gifted program are given an opportunity to use higher level thinking abilities, decision-making skills and problem solving techniques. The program is designed to enhance the educational experience for students who have demonstrated that they can be successful at higher academic levels.
Oak Grove services students identified as gifted according to one of the instructional models outlined by the Georgia Department of Education gifted department.
1. Cluster Grouping - Up to 10 students can be served in a regular classroom setting by a gifted endorsed teacher.
2. Collaborative Teaching - Gifted instruction is provided by a teacher for up to 10 students in a regular classroom setting. This teacher is not gifted endorsed, but collaboratively plans with a gifted endorsed teacher who serves as a consultant for developing and facilitating gifted instruction.
