To comply with the Georgia Department of Education Code IDB 160-4-2-.12 Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Program, you have the right to review the district’s curriculum and content before you choose to have your child participate. You are welcome to view the curriculum materials at:

- Identify methods to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and risk factors of non-communicable diseases

- Recognize how sexual decisions are influenced by group pressures (e.g., community, media, and peer).

- Relate how personal health practices dealing with nutrition, alcohol, tobacco products, and other drug use affects the functions of the nervous system.
|
- Identify methods to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and whether or not they are effective.
|
- Identify ways of resisting persuasive tactics regarding sexual involvement (e.g., saying "no," negotiation, using refusal and decision-making skills).
|
- Identify basic anatomy and function of the male and female reproductive systems.
|
- Define the acronyms HIV/AIDS and STD and recognizes that HIV/AIDS and STDs are communicable diseases.
|
- Identify roles and responsibilities of children in the family.
|
- Analyze physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during the process of maturing.
|
- Recognize that abstaining from sexual activity and refraining from intravenous drug use are the most effective methods of preventing HIV/AIDS.

- Identify parental roles and responsibilities and recognizes that having children is best undertaken in marriage.

- Recognize that abstinence from sexual activity as the only sure method of preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

- Analyze changes in the prospective parents' lifestyles and responsibilities before and after the birth of their baby.

Controversial Issues:
- Some issues in Health, Science, or Family/Consumer Science courses may be considered controversial.
- At no time should students be asked about personal or family, sexual practices and beliefs.
- If your family has concerns regarding possible controversial issues, these three steps are recommended:
- 1.Attend the curriculum/materials review session scheduled for your school.
2.Discuss the class materials with your student.
3.Contact your student’s teacher/administrator if you have any questions/concerns.
Outside Presenters:
- There may be approved outside speakers who might discuss any of the above issues with my child. The teacher will be present in the classroom during presentations.
- The teacher/school must notify parents at least two weeks before any outside speaker is to appear, explaining the purpose of the course or guest speaker. You have the right for your child not to attend that part of the course and receive another assignment during the time period (IDB 160-4-2-.12).
Supplemental Materials:
- Teachers are able to utilize materials that have been approved by the DCSS Board of Education. A Comprehensive Health Education Advisory Committee meets quarterly to review and recommend additional resources to the Board of Education for their consideration.
- Magazine and newspaper articles are reviewed by the local administrators to determine usage in the classroom.
- A list of approved supplemental materials is available. Please contact your local administrator for additional information.
