What are we doing?
(Enduring Understandings)

Focus: Understanding why history is important.
            Understanding where we can from, how we got hereand how the first native Americans survived.

1. Students will understand that where people live matters.
2. Students will understand that moving to new places changes the people, land, and culture of the new place,  as well as the place that was left.
3. Students will explain the meaning of : "What is History?"
5. Students will use Divergent Thinking to comprehend the Standards.
6. Students will use Critical Thinking Skills and Critical Reading Skills in order to comprehend the information in the texts.

Course Description:

GPS for Social Studies:   Fourth grade students will begin the formal study of United States history, from the development of Native American cultures to the year 1860. Concepts in geography, government, and economics will interface with the study of history.  By the end of 4th grade, students will be able to:
  • Explain the development of early Native American cultures in  North America
  • Describe the European exploration of North America and explain the factors that shaped British colonial America, as well as the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution
  • Analyze the challenges faced in governing the new American nation, westward expansion, and the abolitionist and suffrage movements
  • Locate the important geographical features of the United States, both natural and man-made, and describe how these physical systems affect the growth of the U. S.
  • Describe and explain the significance of selected historical documents and of governmental functions as they relate to democratic beliefs and freedoms
  • Use economic concepts of trade, opportunity cost, specialization, voluntary exchange, productivity, and price incentives to illustrate historical events.

Homework Times for Grade 4:
Fourth Grade students should receive between 40 minutes to 60 minutes of content area homework per night and reading for practice and/or pleasure can be beyond this time.

Assignment/Homework Policy

Homework assignments are due at the beginning of each class.  All assignments are expected on the due date.  Students will not receive full credit for late projects and assignments.  

Homework:
Opportunity for 100% credit  – the day the assignment is due.
                             75% credit   -  the second day the assignment is due.
                              50% credit  -  the third day the assignment is due.
                                0 % credit – if the assignment is not turned in by the fourth day.
Graded Homework:
Homework for practice will focus on the practice of Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) that have been introduced and taught in class. Teachers will provide feedback to students about homework as practice assignments.  This homework will not be graded.  Smaller and more meaningful homework assignments will result in more appropriate homework for students and more time for teachers to determine the quality of the work under the homework for practice component.  

Homework for grading will be assignments that are used to evaluate specific skills after sufficient practice and re-teaching have taken place.  Homework for grading will be evaluated for a grade.

Assignment/Class Work/ Projects
Opportunity for 100% credit  – the day the assignment is due.
                              90% credit  – the second day the assignment is due.
                              80% credit  -  the third day the assignment is due.
                              70% credit  -  the fourth day the assignment is due.
                                0% credit  – if the assignment is not turned in by the fourth day.

Agendas will be stamped in the appropriate subject area with a “missing work” stamp on each day an assignment is missing.   If the child does not have their agenda with them, they will call the parent/guardian to notify them of the missing assignments.  

At a school for High Achievers it is unacceptable for students not to turn in their assignments.  Students who persist in not turning in assignments may have to miss a school activity to complete their work.  Late work will be accepted for full credit only when a student is absent or in a case of a family emergency with a written note from a parent.  Students returning from an absence are expected to turn in due or overdue work given to them prior to the absence.

Tuesday tutorial sessions will be offered as needed.  After-school Tutorial will last from 2:30 – 3:15.  Students MUST bring written permission (forms are available of the KMS website).  
permission form to the teacher on Tuesday, during homeroom.  Students MUST be picked up by 3:15.
