  • Homework for This Week
Monday~ Complete a "Fish" reading comprehension sheet.  Use a highlighter!   (Due Tuesday)
Tuesday~        Read a *just right* chapter book of your choice for at least 20 minutes.
Wednesday~Relax and enjoy time with your family!
Thursday~       Read a *just right* chapter book of your choice for at least 20 minutes.
Friday~         Relax and enjoy time with your family!

  • How to Use a Highlighter for Comprehension Homework

  • Use a highlighter to show all the places in the passage where you have found your answers.  Think of it as proving that your answers are correct by highlighting them . . . right there in the text.

  • Reread what you’ve highlighted, and make sure that you’ve marked correct answers.

  • It’s not always possible to find your answers in the text, because sometimes you have to figure answers out by using clues in the passage.  Use the highlighting strategy whenever you can, though.

  • What can you expect this year?

  • Students will make intelligent choices about what they read.
  • They’ll navigate books with pleasure and confidence, because there is no place for frustration in a passionate reader’s life.
  • They’ll realize that there are different purposes for reading.
  • They’ll find out how fiction feeds their heart, and nonfiction feeds their mind.
  • They’ll learn that abandoning a book that they’re not enjoying is a smart move . . . not a character defect.
  • They’ll learn that the desire to reread a beloved book isn’t something to be ashamed of.
  • They’ll carve out identities for themselves as readers.
  • They’ll become smarter, happier, more compassionate people because of the worlds they'll experience within print!
  • They’ll engage in the single activity that consistently correlates with higher levels of performance on standardized tests . . . frequent, voluminous reading.

  • Of all the activities in which children engage outside of school, time spent reading is the best predictor of overall academic achievement.  Here are some tips for families:

  • Help your child associate reading with pleasure!  Children, like adults, will choose to return again and again to that which they enjoy.
  • Encourage your child to look for reading materials that relate to interests he/she enjoys . . .  sports, animals, etc.
  • Have your child read aloud for 10 minutes each day to increase fluency, develop expression, and maximize self-confidence in oral reading.
  • Set a good example! Children need to see their parents enjoying great books!
  • Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it. This is a  great way to build capacity for thought and share insights.
  • Listen to books on audio. Listen to them in the car, or turn off the TV and have the family listen to them together.
  • Take your children to the library regularly. The Dunwoody Public Library is conveniently located at the corner of Womack and Chamblee-Dunwoody Roads.
  • Subscribe in your child's name to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, American Girl, or National Geographic Kids.
  • Having trouble finding a good book?  Click on the link below for some ideas.

  • September At-Home Reading
Students should read a chapter book of their choice this month.  Parents can help by making sure the book is "just right" . . .  not too easy, and not too hard.  There is no book-report requirement.

  • Third-Grade Monthly Reading Requirements for 2014 - 2015

  • Students will be required to read at least one chapter book each month.  They will be allowed time during school to read the book and will also be expected to read the book at home.  Upon completion of the book, students should record the title on their red "Reading Record," which will be housed in their binder.   Reading additional books over the course of the month will be highly encouraged.  Any additional books should be recorded on the red "Reading Record" as well.

  • Students may obtain their books from Austin's media center, public libraries, book stores, or home collections.  Parents and students should use their best judgment in determining the appropriate length and readability of the books; students have been trained in class to select  "Just Right" books.

  • Please refer to the chart below for specific, monthly requirements.

  • I will be available for conferences most Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:45 - 3:15 p.m.  The best way to schedule a conference is to e-mail me at ingrid_e_allen@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us.  Please feel free to request a "team conference" if you'd like Mrs. Cook and/or Ms. Hildreth to join us.

  • Of Special Note . . .

  • Homework Planners should be initialed nightly by  parents.
  • Parents must send in an e-mail or written note after their child has been absent from school with an explanation of the absence.  Teachers are required to report  absenses as Excused or Unexcused. Excused absenses include illness, death in the family, or observance of a religious holiday.
  • Donations of Puffs plus Lotion tissue, Lysol or Clorox wipes, and Band Aids are always appreciated in our ongoing effort to keep our students healthy.  Many thanks for your help!
  • Does your child have a public library card?  If not, now is the time to take care of this important task.  Your child needs to learn how to use the public library and will enjoy book browsing.  He/she should take advantage of the library's selection of books on audio, too.  These are great for the car and will help improve vocabulary and listening-comprehension skills!  Please consider making weekly or bi-weekly visits to the library a part of your family routine.
