This is not a complete list of activities during our day - just a small tasting of what we covered.  :)

September 10
We learned about primary colors.  We learned about shades and tints.  We sang Ms. Everett's Red, Yellow and Blue songs.  We learned about the greater than and less than sign.  We learned that the crocodile always eats the bigger number.  We learned the differences between questions and statements.  We learned when to use a period or a question mark.  We learned that questions start with what, why, how, where, when, and can.   We learned how to "count on" on a number line.  We used equations to show our number sentences.    

September 11
We worked on our journals in a new way.  We are exploring word families in our morning work.  We are loving the _at family.  We made our first class book!  It was called "Mary Wore Her Red Dress".  We sang the song.  We played the number circle game with the penny and counted by ones.  We had to listen carefully to our friends to play the game.  

September 12
We got a new printer for our classroom from Grayson's mom!  Grayson said his mom was a genius!  We played a game about counting by 2's.  We taped 2 pennies on our frog.  We used a number line to help us look at numbers.  We learned that syllables are chunks of sounds in words.  We learned that we can clap them out to see how many a word has.  We made Purple Stew.  We learned to rotate around the room for centers by colored tables.  

September 13
We took our class picture today!  We also took individual pictures.  We illustrated silly words that go in the _at word family.  We sang our first class book.  We got all of our brownie points today!  We got to vote to see how we would use our special reward.  We had our second Mystery Reader today!  Clara's mom came on her birthday to read.  Today, Talen's mom came to read!  

September 17
We worked on our handwriting.  We had Cora's mom teach a lesson about Labor Day.  Labor Day celebrates jobs.  We learned about different kinds of jobs.  We learned "Old Dan Tucker" song.  We practiced singing a special song for our moms.  We don't want to say what it is because it is a surprise!

September 21
Alana's grandmother taught a lesson to us about the Pledge of Allegiance.  It was so fun!  We got to take home American FLAGS & make book marks.  We sang to our mothers at our Muffins and Moms celebration.  We love our moms!  

September 24
We are showing Ms. Everett what we know as she visits with each one of us individually at her "testing window" for 45 minutes each.  We are learning that testing means we get to show off.  We will enjoy testing because we just say or write what we already have in our brain.  If we don't know the answer, Ms. Everett taught us not to get upset or frustrated.  This district testing will show growth throughout the year.  If we show Ms. Everett what we do not know yet, then she will be able to teach us what we need to know for first grade and for life.  

September 25
We sorted types of food.  Ms. Everett let us step up to the "testing window".  She listened to each one of us tell her about our families.  

September 26
We learned the Brown song.  We learned about Johnny Appleseed.  We did a chart about who he was.  We sequenced Johnny Appleseed's life.  We read a story about the life cycle of an apple tree.  We had an apple tasting.  We judged red, yellow and green apples.  We graphed our favorite kind.  Most people liked red.  The least people liked yellow.  Green apples came in second.

September 27
We had a mystery reader.  It was Shreya's mom.  We read the story "OH, NO!".  The author will visit us on Friday!  We wrote an extended ending to the story in Writer's Workshop.  We got to use our purple folders for the first time.  We made a year's life cycle of an apple tree.  Please come see our work in the hallway soon.  

September 28
We had a fire drill in Drama Class.  It was very loud!  Ekam's mom taught us a lesson about the American Flag and the State of Georgia Flag.  We didn't know anything about Georgia's flag.  We learned more about the American flag.  We worked in table groups to make big American flags.  We got to meet the author and the illustrator of the book, "Oh, NO!".  It was very fun.  

October 1
We learned about new words...equal to, greater than, and less than.  We illustrated a cookie story about the new math words.  We talked about the letter Pp.  We worked on a Pp project.  We learned how Fred wrote the letter Pp.  

October 2
We did centers.  Ekam's mom came to tell us about his Patkah. We learned about Sikhism.   We learned many new things.  Joey's birthday was today!  His mom read a story with his little sister, Brooke.  "One of the stories was Joey's last name and a lot of things that happened."

October 3
Today was Owen's birthday.  His mom came to teach a lesson about our Five Senses.  She was also our mystery reader.  We have the sense of hearing, seeing, tasting, touching, smelling. We learned about sets of objects that are equal and not equal.  We learned how to write the equal sign and created our own groups.  Today was walk to school day.  We hoped everyone would walk to school.  

October 4
We learned how to write properly in our seats.  We learned how to write with a pencil bird pencil grip.  We learned that all letters are written from the top line and pulled down.  We learned

October 5
We learned about Christopher Columbus.  Owen's mom came to teach us about this famous explorer.  She taught us a new song and read 2 books!  We made Christopher Columbus ships from apples, toothpicks & marshmallows.  We ate the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria!  Ms. Everett's brother came from Houston to visit and help her move her school things that were in her living room.  He brought in 1/3 of the things.  

October 9
We made our own Christopher Columbus books for our book bag in our Red Boxes. We sang the Christopher Columbus song.  We read our stories to our friends.  We used a 100 chart to county by 2's.  Our homework is to count by 2's to our families.  We found a big cockroach in our classroom this morning.  We saw a bug in our recycling box, too.  We are going to be very careful with our food.  No crumbs!  

October 10
We practiced counting by 5's.  We read a story from Arah.  He donated it to our class because it was his birthday!  Happy birthday, Arah!  Someone lost their glasses on the playground and we looked for them during recess.  We earned a brownie party today because we were so awesome!  We had art class at a different time because of testing.  The odd number grades took important tests today.  We had art class longer because we won't have any Activity time tomorrow.  

October 11
Another class came to sing with us and watch a story about a pumpkin giant.  We didn't have Specials classes because of the older grades testing, so we did that instead.  We learned about letters having gravity.  We practiced the letter F.  We have homework tonight to practice the letter F.  Our parents need to watch us write the letter to make sure we are doing them correctly.  Letters have gravity and they pull down.  Our parents need to put a star at the top of our homework to show Ms. Everett.  We don't need to bring it back tomorrow, we can bring it any day.  Today, we all got on SUPER STAR!!!!!! We got a brownie party immediately!

October 12
We had a very different schedule today.  We got our song folders and sight word homework.  We had snack, centers, went outside and packed up all before lunch.  After lunch we went go to the computer lab and took a test for an hour and a half!  Then we went to music.  Our schedule was different because of the odd number grades' tests and our test.   

October 15
We got our song folders today!  Ms. Everett said that all of her students love their song folder!  They tell Ms. Everett about how they still sing their songs in their song folders when they are in high school! We took a math test and we got to show Ms. Everett what we know!  We even have a little jump we do before we take a test.  We read a special book given to us by Alana.  It had so many words in the title!  We got to be illustrators to our songs!  We read our songs using our finger pointers.  Finger pointers help us to not get lost when we read.  

October 16
We had specials at the end of the day because of testing in the older grades.  We learned how to tell if a group of words is a sentence.  We made sentences out of words.  We sang the "Stop Your Words Song" and wrote our own sentences.  We made sure we used our periods!  We made a 100 chart and counted by 10's.  We illustrated one other song.  We are learning the difference between an author and an illustrator. We are good at both!  

October 17
Ms. Everett was sick at home.  We had a substitute teacher named Ms. Jamgochian.  She was nice.  She was happy.  We didn't get a chance to play in center because we were so busy.  

October 18
We wrote letter D's.  We learned to pull down our letters.  We went to the library and checked out 2 books.  We get to bring them home but we have to bring them back in 2 weeks.  

October 22
It is Red Ribbon Week.  We learned that drugs are very bad for you.  We made puppets that said, "No!" to drugs.  We got red ribbons.  We are supposed to wear them every week day this week.

October 23
We made a story map that showed the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of a story.  Reading is important because it can make you smart and when you are big, you won't be able to sit in your parents' laps to read to you.  We wrote a story about drugs.  We made a poster for the school's Red Ribbon Week poster contest.  We painted our hands and put our hand prints on the poster.  It tickled and was cold!   

October 24
We learned about rocks and soil from Shreya's mom.  We made a story map about a spider story that Jack bought for our class!  We learned about how a pumpkin grows.  We saw a real farm that grows hundreds of pumpkins!  We learned how to count on from any number Ms. Everett gave us.  She tried to trick us very hard!  We couldn't be tricked.  We practiced adding one more to any number, too.  

October 25
We made a story map of Ms. Everett's favorite author, Mo Willems' book.  Owen bought it for our class!  We had a mystery reader!  It was Grayson's mom.  We played a pumpkin life cycle game and made our own pumpkin life cycle charts.  We will  hang them in the hall for all to see.  

October 26
We talked about how vowels make 2 sounds.  We separated vowels and consonants.  We made a pumpkin life cycle that we are taking home today!  We got real live jobs in our classroom!  We can't wait to start our new jobs on Monday.  Each week we get a new job.  We shared our journals today.  

October 29
We finished our vowel and consonant page.  We made our own counting pumpkins game.  It has a special end of the game page.  We made a 3-D shape.  It is a cube.  We worked so hard today that we were like vowels!  Most of us got to do our jobs today.  

October 30-November 1
Ms. Everett was sick & we had a substitute teacher.

November 2
Today we did a pumpkin counting book.  We learned little songs to help us write our numbers.  We celebrated fall with a special treat from Alana.  Everyone got to participate because we were ALL SUPER STARS!!!  We had our activity in the lunch room so we could practice our play.  

November 5
We learned about sinking and floating objects.  We learned that things are buoyant if they float.  We started our pumpkin observation booklet.  It will go home on Friday after we are finished.  We learned about the presidents of the United States of America.  We learned what the president does.  We learned why we aren't coming to school tomorrow.  We learned about voting for president.  We asked Ms. Everett who she was going to vote for, but teachers can't share that.  We talked about the candidates.

November 7
We talked about the new president.  We talked about how to be a good sport when you lose at something.  We measured our pumpkin in inches and pounds.  We measured how tall it was.  We measured the circuference of many things in our classroom.  We counted the ribs of the pumpkin.  It was very hard!  We practiced writing more "frog jump" letters.  We got new bar in our coat closet so we can hang our coats.  It would be nice if we could all bring one hanger labeled with our name so we can hang our coats.  In centers, a couple of friends build an incredible house with a very long chimney.  It was 26 inches tall!  

November 8
We forgot to write about our math lesson from yesterday.  We got to play outside of the ten frame.  And now we are on to the double ten frame.  We could only go to 10 in the 10 frame, but we get to go to 20 in the double 10 frame!  Some people's brains were ready for 5 ten frames!  We will ALL get there by the end of the year.
Today, we played double 10 frame bingo. We matched double ten frames with their number words. We practiced writing our letters.  Ms. Everett looked at every single letter we wrote to make sure we were writing them correctly.  We showed our hidden turkey projects!  

November 9
We got to take our Pumpkin Observation Booklet home.  We have one more page to finish at home, but it is not homework.  You can finish it any day you would like and you don't have to bring it back.  Today, we opened up the pumpkin and estimated how many seeds were inside.  We counted by 10's to see how many seeds we had.  We learned that counting seeds by 10's is a quick way to count.  We had 625 seeds!! We learned about adjectives.  We used adjectives to describe our pumpkin.  We got to take Ms. Everett's basketball on the playground.  

November 12
We did a Venn Diagram about Thanksgiving long ago and today.  We learned to write a story that happened to us.  Everyone had a different story because we are all different.  We added a song to our song folder.  

November 13
We practiced 10 frame numbers.  We earned a brownie party because the principal gave us a compliment in the hall!  We chose to do 30 minutes of free centers.  We made 4 seasons headbands.  We are writing real stories that happened to us in Writer's Workshop.  We added a song to our song folder.  

November 26
We collected rocks for our Rock Museum.  It is awesome!  We learned how important rocks are.  We wrote stories about what we did over the Thanksgiving Holiday.  We all read our sight words to Ms. Everett.  We added a new song to our song folder.  We got new gates on our playground!   

November 27
We sorted and classified rocks.  Some of us even made our own rock sorting mats.  We are making ten frame flash cards with equations at the bottom.  We learned about a new listening game in the listening center.  If you went to Ms. Everett's reading group center, please bring your book and ABC strip back tomorrow.  

November 28
We got new folders for Literacy Centers, Math Workshop, and Science and Social Studies.  We got to play "Greater Than Flip It" with our ten frame flash cards.  We got to play with a partner.  

November 29
Ms. Bowden got to see how smart we are!  Ms. Everett had been telling her how smart we were and she just had to come see!  She was smiling because she was so proud.  We did math centers with games that were just right for each of our brains.  We had an extra long Writer's Workshop because everyone wanted to write and write! We practiced how to count like "big children" and not "babies".  We are so smart!

November 30
We made a flow chart of a rock's life.  We played double ten frame bingo with Ms. Harvey's class.  We had 6 minutes of free centers because we worked so hard this week!  Ms. Gillett read Corduroy to us! It was "Free Draw" day in Writer's Workshop!

December 7
We learned about the White House.  Clara and her mom taught us a wonderful lesson.  We went to the computer lab for almost 2 hours to take a "Benchmark Test".  We were tired, but we did a great job!

December 10
We took a vote to see if Clara's rock was a rock or a mineral.  Most people voted for rock.  Rock won by 4 votes.  We learned about shapes.  Shapes are everywhere!   We sorted shapes by common attributes.  We learned a fancy word for corner.  When we went outside for 3 minutes, it started raining.  We got to play in free centers instead.  

December 12
We learned about Chanukkah from Maya and her mom.  We learned a new game and learned about polygons!  We ordered the winner of the game.  We earned a brownie party and chose to play in free centers.  Yay!  

December 13
We learned about a new center.  It is called Read Around the Room.  Reading is fun!  We are having some friends over from another class.  We compared a square and a circle.  They are very different and very alike.  We took a color, shape and listening test today.  It was fun.  Someone even said, "This is fun!"  We learned about how writer's use quotes to capture a character's words.

December 14
We played a shape math game.  We read our first of many Gingerbread stories and identified the characters, setting, beginning, middle, end.  

December 17
We played a different shape game.  We compared/contrasted 2 shapes.  We conferenced with Ms. Everett about our writing.  We read a gingerbread story and made our own story maps.  We got to publish our writing and put it in the hall for all to see!  We used special publishing markers!  

December 18
We played a very hard math game and Ms. Everett almost tricked us.  We did math centers.  We compared and contrasted 2 gingerbread stories.  We are writing about our favorite story.  

December 19
We wrote numbers and letters.  We said, "Look what I can do!" We had reader's workshop.  We went bananas.  We read a new gingerbread story!  We compared and comtrasted 3 stories!

In January...
We wrote persuasive writing pieces about why our dad is nice/awesome/cool/responsible/important/helpful/playful/funny/good/creative.
We have been comparing 3-D shapes.
We have been reading stories that are at a level just right for us.  
We have been learning hard vocabulary words.  We write a sentence using the word in class and in homework.
We have been learning how to write a sentence.  A sentence starts with an upper case letter, followed by lower case letters (unless it is someone's name), words are separated by finger spaces and the sentence stops with a period.
We are learning how to write and answer questions.
We have been learning about motion and how things move in science.

January 22
We have been learning about 3-D shapes.  We learned about what a great person Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We learned about fairness and segregation.  We counted some 100 charts.  We shared our 3-D shape homework.  

January 23
We wrote a story about our house for our portfolios.  Our portfolios will follow us to 5th grade!!!!  We collected nature for a snowman story.  We did such a great job in math centers!  We love 3-D shapes!  We counted more 3-D posters.

January 24
We learned about our 100 centers for tomorrow!  Ms. Everett did a little lesson about each center.
100 Day Centers!
1. Q-tip painting – children paint 10 sets of 10 dots around the number 100
2. Fruit loop necklace – children sort 10 groups of 10 Fruit Loops & thread them on a necklace
3. 100 Day Hat – children use 10 strips of paper to make 10 thumbprints, 10 stamps, 10 words, 10 shapes, 10 letters, 10 self names, 10 friends’ names, 10 numbers, 10 stickers, 10 do-a-dots
4. 100 Picture – children use the numbers 1, 0, 0 to create a creative picture
5. 100 Legos – children sort 10 groups of 10 legos and build a creation.
6. 100 Day Friends – children illustrate the friends they have made at school
7. 100 Year Old Portraits – children use construction paper to illustrate themselves as 100 years old.  We discussed centenarians and super centenarians.
8. 100 Letter Name Pattern – children write/color their name in boxes to 100
9. Journal – I would want to have 100…..

January 25
We celebrated our dads this morning!  It was so much fun! We read a story to them and they read a story to us!  We did 100 centers all day long.  Ms. Everett invited Ms. Crenshaw, our principal, to see our awesome centers.  She stayed a long time and she couldn't believe how smart we were.   She asked us lots of questions.  We couldn't finish our centers today because we took our time to do our best work.  We will finish on Monday.

January 28 & 29
We finished our 100 centers!  We worked so, so, so, so hard and are so, so, so, so proud of our work!  

January 31
Our new vocabulary word was "jolly".  We practicied writing proper sentences.  We explored math centers.  We started our snowman writing project.  We are practicing writing questions and answering them.  Question marks are hard to write!   

February 1
We saw the Nutcracker play and we loved it!  The second graders put on the play.  We loved the Hanukkah dance, the soldiers jumping on the mice, the soldiers marching, the stinky feet part, the girl dancer parts, when the farmers were on the stage, the house part and when the Chineese tea shop did a hand stand.  

February 3
We wrote questions and answers about our nature snowman.  We turned it into a writing piece.  They are hanging in the hall.  We learned the basics of addition & some tricks to join numbers.

February 5
We wrote about the most important thing in the world.  Here are some of our ideas...Barak Obama, to share, love, playing with toys and going to school, Earth, God, heart, trees, work, listening, drawing, glass, and a fire drill.  We are learning how to do addition with a ten frame.  The plus sign is the "love sign" that brings numbers together!  We are making a vocabulary collection of writing that will be stored in our Take-Home Binders.  

February 7
We wrote about a new vocabulary word.  We made number stories with red and yellow cookies. (pretend cookies) We wrote equations. We got a brownie party (not with real brownies, of course) and got to go to free centers this afternoon.   

February 8-19
We have been learning....
  • about short and long vowels
  • about "Sneaky e" - he hangs out at the end of words & makes the short vowel long
  • about addition - we have been joining numbers in many ways!
  • about perfect sentences - sentences that start with an upper case letter, has finger spaces and ends with punctuation.  
  • about new vocabulary words

February 20
We learned about baby animals from Srijith's mom!  We played a new long vowel game.  We learned practiced our skills in Literacy Centers & Math Centers.We got a brownie party from our good behavior!  We played in free centers!

February 21
We started the Perfect Sentence Club!  We searched for sneaky e words.  We played with vowels.  We played a cup game to search for the missing number in number sentences!  We enjoyed many addition centers.  :)

February 25
We are freely writing in our journals.  We are writing about experiences & feelings.  We listened to a dentist speak about dental care.  We wrote fact books about maintaining healthy teeth.  A fact is something that is real and true.  

March 4
We learned about verbs.  We went on a journal walks.  We are adding in many different ways.  

March 5
We learned more about verbs.  We learned about using an upper case "I" when it is used as a word.  Now there are 3 reasons to use upper case letters!  We are combining sets of numbers.  

March 6
We learned about writing a juicy piece of writing by adding details.  We talked about how our brain would be so interested in reading a juicy story.  We explored addition centers & Ms. Bowden gave Ms. Everett the nicest compliment in the world!  

March 7
We used our imaginations to create square art and sentences.  We went to the library.  We shared our writing.  

March 13
We learned how to do math mountains.  We are counting up to find the sum.  We got several compliments from teachers in the hallway.  We got a brownie party at the end of our day.  We have 5 more chapters to read in Charlotte's Web before the field trip on Friday.  We got 2 new students!!!

March 14
We learned about St. Patrick's Day!  We had a green, healthy snack.  We harvested carrots!  We made our own math mountains.  They were special to our school.  

March 15
We went on a field trip to see Charlotte's Web!  We were exhausted on the bus ride home.  Someone even shouted that it was the best day of their life!

March 18
We learned about the main idea.  Ms. Everett brought many supporting details and we had to tell her the main idea.  We learned how riddles work!  We were so excited!  We have 200 of them to finish before kindergarten is over.  

March 19
We are working on story problems and subtraction.  We are teaching our brains how to find the main idea.  We practiced finding the main idea on our riddles.

March 20
We wrote our own Main Idea graphic organizer.  We practiced subtraction with stories.  We did addition story problems.  We wrote wonderful sentences in our journals.  :)

March 21
We are almost finished reading Charlotte's Web.  We got tissues today because we read the saddest chapter.  We are working on St. Patrick's Day literacy centers.  We had a Mystery Reader.  We are learning how to write subtraction equations.  We did riddles in our reading groups today!

March 25
The First Lady of Georgia read a story to us in the library.  We learned about adjectives.  We practiced writing subtraction equations.  We talked about manners.

March 26
We wrote subtraction word problems!  We practiced using adjectives on ourselves.  We wrote addition word problems all by ourselves.  We finished up our Literacy Centers rotations.  We earned a Brownie Party & got 10 minutes of free centers!  

March 28
We went to the library today.  We had a Mystery Reader!  We are voicing our opinions & learning how to "Opinion Write".  We are examining a story.  

April 1 & 2
We wrote stories about the QU union.  We will publish our stories for the QU Reception.  We made tissue paper flower decorations for the QU Wedding Reception.  We played on the playground by the gym because Ms. Everett loves watching us act like children!  She loves to hear, "Watch me, Ms. Everett!" and "Look what I can do, Ms. Everett!"  We practiced our songs for the QU wedding.  We took pictures for the QU reception.  

April 3
We drew QU pictures filled with Q's and U's.  We made a Thank You card for our special friends.  We took pictures of us as queens and quarterbacks for the Thank You cards.  We finished our QU stories.  We set up the classroom for the reception.

April 4
We attended the QU wedding dressed as letters.  We had a recption in our classroom with special friends.  We sang and ate.  We said special wishes to the happy couple!   

April 5
We took a math test.  We went to the first grade's circus performance with the entire school.  We did not go to special classes.  We went to the library.

April 15
We shared our journal stories about Spring Break adventures.  We took a language arts test.  We wrote letters and sounds.  We wrote a descriptive story about our favorite fruit.  

April 16-18
We learned about trees and plants.  We learned how they help our planet.  We planted beans to grow our own plants.  We are using our tree knowledge to write fiction stories about trees.  They have 3 parts and we will type them on the computer.  We are reviewing addition and subtraction.
We are keeping a plant journal to track each stage of our growing bean.  It is fun to make something come to life!  We also

April 22
We had Kindergarten Round-Up today!  We welcomed the kindergarten children who will come to our school next year!  We started our spring project.  Today was Earth Day!!!

April 23-25
We are writing 3 part stories.  We are reviewing & practicing subtraction and addition.  We practiced and reviewed field trip safety. We are expanding sentences. We are reading and reading!  We made a zoo plan.  We strategized how we would move through the zoo.  We used a map to determine the animals we wanted to see and how we would get to each area of the zoo.  

April 26
We went to the zoo!  The day had finally arrived!  We stayed together and followed the field trip rules.  We were super great listeners.  We saw lots of animals.  We followed our zoo plan.  We did a great job and had lots of fun.  We were so tired when we got back!
