Social Studies & Science Lesson Volunteer
A great lesson is hands on & fun! Here is the structure of a good lesson.
1. Attention Getter - something that gets the children interested in the topic. Dress in a costume, introduce a puppet, have a real item, play a guessing game with the object/topic of interest is in a bag, sing a song, etc.
2. Instruction - teach the information you want the children to learn. Read a book, show a slide show presentation, tell a story, show artifacts, show a video, etc.
3. Practice as a class - let the children have a chance to recall information or practice the skill being taught. Play a class game, give a verbal quiz "Let's see who remembers...", give children yes/no paddles to vote with as you question them about the topic, let them work in groups to practice skills or play a game, etc.
4. Independent Practice - children apply the knowledge on their own. Children can work at their seats to create a product that shows what they have learned, a worksheet (but sometimes worksheets are not very open ended), a cut/paste product, an art project, etc.
5. Closure - Gather the children to talk about what they have learned with you. Get feedback on what they thought & answer questions.
Please work on the lesson with your child. Rehearse & experiment together. If your child would like doing the activity (try with your child first), then it will be fun for the class. The more visuals/items/artifacts you have, the better! There are so many teacher lessons online! Google "kindergarten lesson" & the topic. You should find some amazing things!
I expect the children to be respectful & good listeners/learners for you the way they are for me. I will be there to redirect any behavior issues. A good phrase I like to use is..."You have a choice, you can either _________ or not participate with the class." Works every time. Please be mindful about little learner's feelings. We don't want to embarrass or call out a child.
Have fun - that is what teaching is all about! Plan to take a nap right after the lesson. You will be tired!

INSTRUCTIONS...
Completion Time: Any time during the day before 2:00pm
I will do my best to put the box outside of our door on Thursdays. I am really trying to minimize distractions so learning can flow, uninterrupted in our classroom. If the box is not outside of the door, you are welcome to quietly open the door & sneak the box out. It will be on the floor, just inside the door.
1. Please put all of the folders in numerical order.
2. Please stuff the folders with the papers inside the box.
3. Return the box outside of our door.
If...there is not enough of one kind of flyer, please make an extra copy. The printer room is located 1 door away, to the right of the office. My copy number is 13382. Enter the number on the screen to make copies. Make the copies & clear the copier (by pressing 2 clear buttons at the same time) when you are finished. This will prevent others from making copies on my account.
If...there is not a folder for each child, please make a stack for the child with the missing folder. Paper clip the stack together and write the student’s number on the top left corner.
Thank you so much for helping! I appreciate you so much!
