Dekalb County 2012 Technology Fair

According to State Technology Fair Guidelines, projects for each category entered in competition must be unique and cannot be entered in more than one category. Students may only register for one category and must print a hard copy of their Project Documentation Form(see details below). Below is a list of the Technology Fair Categories:

  • Animated Graphic Design
  • Non-Animated Graphic Design
  • Digital Video Editing
  • Hardware
  • Robotics
  • Digital Photography
  • Case Modification
  • 3-D Modeling

Projects are to be designed and created by students. Some adult guidance is allowed, but it must be clear that work submitted by students was completed by the students.

Note: No VHS format is accepted for competition. All VHS format must be transferred to iMovie or Windows Media Video Player and shown in a digital format on an iMac or PC.

Software and Hardware

Participants should bring their project on digital media (CD ROM or USB flash drive). Hardware (Macs and PCs) as well as Internet connections will be in place the day of the Technology Fair.

Software supported by DeKalb County:

  • Windows XP or lower
  • Microsoft Office (MS Office 2003 or lower): PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Access
  • Web Page (using web design software or HTML)
  • Inspiration
  • Timeliner
  • Video Production
  • Windows Media Player
  • iMovies
  • ActivInspire

Projects that use software not listed above will require the participant to bring their own hardware and software.

Students unable to present their projects at the tech fair, even due to illness, may NOT use "proxies" unless they are part of the original, registered team representing a project. Students 16 and older may drive themselves to the Tech Fair. All other students must be accompanied by an adult.

Students entering as a team must compete at the grade level of the oldest member of the team. Teams are made up of two members.

Category/Grade Level Divisions

Awards within each category will be issued to recipients based on the Grade Level Divisions listed below. This applies to all Technology Fair categories above except multimedia.

  • Grades 3 - 4
  • Grades 5 - 6
  • Grades 7 - 8
  • Grades 9 - 10
  • Grades 11 - 12

Awards within the Multimedia Category will be issued to recipients based on each grade level within grades 3-12.

Project Documentation Form Requirements

Projects submitted for competition are required to have a printed copy of the Project Documentation Form that documents how the project was created.

American Memory Collection
Some of these images are copyrighted and some are not. When you find an image you want to use, scroll down the page until you see a topic called Working With the Collection. Under Working with the Collection there will be a hyperlink entitled Copyright and Other Restrictions. Click on Copyright and Other Restrictions link to view the copyright permissions. You may print out the web page that says the picture is copyright free as proof of copyright permission.

USDA OnLine Photography Center
Click here for a downloadable and printable permission slip. When using sounds or images that do not expressly give copyright permission, the student must e-mail the copyright owner to obtain copyright permission. If using Soundzaboundz CD Roms, include a copy of the Permission to Use form that comes with Soundzaboundz.

If using GLRS CD Roms, obtain the Permission to Use form from GLRS personnel. Click here to download a Word document that you may attach to an e-mail to obtain permission for images, sound, etc. that you obtain from the Internet.
